Strand Woven Bamboo Floors Explained
Maybe you're in search of some inspiration to remodel your home and make it more modern? If so, you may come across a new product offering called strand woven bamboo floors. Strand woven bamboo floors are the latest offering in the bamboo flooring category of products manufactured using a form of grass known as bamboo. Bamboo flooring is considered a more cost-efficient alternative to hardwood flooring using non-sustainable rainforest hardwoods in its construction. Although similar in appearance to hardwood, bamboo flooring has a few more desirable features including a resistance to insects and moisture that makes it a good choice for use in damp or tropical climates.
Strand woven bamboo floors are created by stripped Moso bamboo stalks averaging 5 years in age which are then boiled in a solution of boric acid and water to remove the sugar content as an anti-termite preventative. Once the bamboo strips have been properly dried, they are woven together with a Finnish plasticizer called Dynea. The next step in the process to create strand woven bamboo is crushing this woven material in a 2,000 ton heat press operating at a 265F temperature. The resulting strand woven bamboo board is then milled using high precision German laser equipment designed to create bamboo boards that are each the same measurement.
Following the milling process, each strand woven bamboo floor board is sanded and then coated a maximum of 7 times using an aluminum oxide finish which is considered to be the most resilient flooring finish available so that the surface of each bamboo board can stand up to tough punishment when used in any flooring application. Strand woven bamboo is considered to be an improvement over traditional bamboo flooring which is created by gluing together numerous strips. Strand woven bamboo is considerably more durable than traditional bamboo boards and much easier to refinish or maintain.
Strand woven bamboo flooring is available in two different colors: natural blonde or carbonized amber, a darker color achieved when the bamboo is heat pressed. Strand woven bamboo retains its color because coloring is not achieved by simply staining the surface of the board. For durability and hardness, strand woven bamboo flooring is comparable to Brazilian cherry wood or iron wood. But unlike these wood flooring materials, strand woven bamboo is less costly and easier to install. Strand woven bamboo is created using no harmful or hazardous materials, making it an environmentally as well as eco-friendly flooring option that is suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications.
